Boxing: Abregu upsets Dolorme, Diaz decisions Quintero in New York

Underdog Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1-0, 30 KOs) scored the biggest win of his career, with an upset over the formerly undefeated Thomas Dulorme (16-1-0, 12 KOs), to claim the vacant WBC International welterweight title. Abregu connected with some power punches early in the fight and even dropped Dulorme in the third round. The Argentine knocked Dulorme down again in the seventh and the fight was stopped at the 2:35 mark when Dulorme’s corner threw in the towel. In the undercard, Miguel Vazquez (32-3-0, 13 KOs) defended his IBF lightweight tile over Marvin Quintero (25-4-0, 21 KOs). Quintero did his best to cut the distance and unload power punches, but Vazquez masterfully moved around the ring while connecting with clean punches to earn a split decision. Two of the judges preferred the ring generalship and clean punching by Vazquez, scoring the fight 116-112 and 118-110 for the defending champion. The third judge scored the fight 115-113 for Quintero due to his aggression. Quintero earned the right to challenge Diaz for the IBF title after scoring a victory over Filipino Al Sabaupan. Quintero won via ninth round knockout over Sabaupan in a slugfest last April. Sabaupan could figure in another IBF eliminator match to challenge Vazquez, but another Filipino, Mercito Gesta, has a better ranking. Gesta is tabbed as the fifth contender on IBF’s lightweight rankings. - AMD, GMA News
