Boxing: Apolinario draws with Vazquez, Migreno knocks out Wonjongkam

Two Filipino fighters stepped into the ring in different parts of the world in the past week and made good accounts of themselves. On Sunday, John Mark Apolinario (17-2-2, 4 KOs) fought former world champion Roberto Vazquez (32-5-1, 22 KOs) to a draw. The fight was held in Argentina and it was the debut promotion of Maravilla Box, the brainchild of Sergio Martinez. Judge Uriel Aguilera had it 115-113 for Vazquez while judges Jesus Cova and Gustavo Estrella had it 114-114 for a majority draw. Vazquez, the former WBA light flyweight champion, was the second ranked bantamweight by the WBA while Apolinario was ranked third. They battle for the interim WBA bantamweight title which now remains vacant. Journeyman Filipino fighter Rey Migreno (18-20-3, 16 KOs), meanwhile, scored the most meanigful win of his career with a third round knockout over the legendary Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (87-5-2, 46 KOs) of Thailand. Wonjongkam, who was named as the WBC Fighter of the Decade, was coming off four straight wins after losing his WBC flyweight title to Sonny Boy Jaro back in March of this year when he faced Migreno to continue his march towards title contention. However, Migreno dropped him with a big right late in the third round. Wonjongkam got up but was dropped again prompting the referee to call a halt to the bout. Wonjongkam, who defended the WBC flyweight title 17 times in his first title reign, will now retire from professional boxing after the shocking defeat. He won the WBC flyweight title for the first time in 2001 against Malcolm Tunacao via first round knockout. This was Migreno's third time to face Wonjongkam. In their first match, Migreno dropped a clear unanimous decision verdict. The Filipino was knocked out in their second match back in 2010. - RAF, GMA News
