Pinoy boxer Jonathan Taconing wins big in Mexico

World rated light flyweight southpaw Jonathan Taconing proved too much to handle for former world light flyweight champion Ramon Garcia Hirales as he stopped the Mexican in front of his home crowd earlier Sunday at Unidad Deportiva in Metepec, Mexico.

Taconing, 28, is the reigning OPBF champion at 108 pounds. The Filipino moved up in weight for the Hirales clash that was slated in a catchweight of 111 pounds.

Taconing's offense would tell the story of the fight as he tirelessly stalked Hirales with hard combinations to the head and body that had the Mexican backpedalling throughout the contest.

In the final round, a hard right uppercut, followed by two right hooks sent Hirales flying to the ropes, prompting referee Gelasio Huerta to step in and stop the fight at the 2:53 mark.

The fight was Taconing's 8th consecutive victory coming by KO andTKO since suffering a controversial loss in his lone world title bid against Kompayak Porpramook in 2012.

The Zamboanga del Norte native improved his record to 21-2-1 with 18 knockouts while Hirales fell to 20-6-1 with 12 knockouts. - RAF, GMA News
