FOR WBA WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

Pacquiao, Matthysse both pass weigh-in

Both boxing icon and Senator Manny Pacquiao and WBA world champion Argentinian boxer Lucas Matthysse passed the weigh-in on Saturday for the WBA welterweight division.

Pacquiao weighed 146 pounds, while Matthysse weighed 146.7 pounds during the weigh-in at the Malaysia International Trade and Convention Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The welterweight division's limit is 147 pounds.

Eight-division world champ Pacquiao entered the venue in a white shirt with the words "Fight On" written on it.

Prior to his arrival, a video was shown showing snippets from Pacquiao's boxing career to the tune of the song "Lahing Pinoy."

Spotted in the audience was Mommy Dionisia "Mommy D" Pacquiao, the boxing champ's mother.

The event venue was full of boxing fans from many countries, including the Philippines, according to a report by Mav Gonzales on Balitanghali.

Some Filipinos even waved the Philippine flag. One member of the audience held a poster with the sign "Bugbugin mo Manny!"

After the weigh-in, Pacquiao had lunch with Mommy D, fellow politicians, and friends including Bureau of Corrections chief Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, Gonzales tweeted.

Also with Pacquiao were Solicitor General Jose Calida and former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson, according to Gonzales' report on Super Radyo dzBB.

Pacquiao will rest for the remainder of Saturday in preparation for the fight.

The Pacquiao-Matthysse fight for the WBA welterweight title will be held on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to leave for Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to watch the fight on Sunday.

Pacquiao is looking forward to having Duterte watch the fight, and added that he also invited Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to do the same.

Aside from the Pacquiao-Matthysse fight, three world titles will also be up for grabs on Sunday: the WBA featherweight belt (Filipino prodigy Jhack Tepora vs. Mexican Indio Ortega), the WBA light flyweight championship (Carlos Canizales vs. Lu Bin), and the IBF flyweight belt (Moruti Mthalane vs. Muhammad Waseem).

Also to be held on Sunday is the fight of Mig Elorde,  grandson of Gabriel Flash Elorde, against Ratchanon Sawangsoda of Thailand.

Pacquiao's sparring partner George Kambosos Jr. and Pinoy boxer JR Magboo will also participate in the undercard. IBF junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas will be Magboo's cornerman.

Siddharth Varma and hometown Malaysian boxer Theena Thayalan will also have their bout on Sunday.

GMA-7 will air the fight on free TV, with radio coverage to be handled by Super Radyo dzBB. —KG, GMA News
