NU beats UP, ends skid in UAAP women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines – Jennifer Cardoniga and Mervic Mangui teamed up to finally end National University’s six-game slide in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines women’s volleyball tournament. Cardoniga and Mangui combined for 42 points as the Lady Bulldogs squeezed out a hard-earned 25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-11 win against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons Tuesday at the Far Eastern University gym. Cardoniga also had three aces as NU snapped a six-game slide and finally enter the win column. Though NU won its first game, which could boost their confidence in the second round, coach Johnny Candoy said they might face a tougher challenge in the final stretch of the elimination. “It’s a good feeling to finally win, tumaas ang confidence ng mga bata (The win boosted my players’ confidence). I just hope that we can maintain that and compete in the next round," said Candoy. In the other game, La Salle coasted to a 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 win over University of the East. The Lady Archers will briefly hold the top spot with a 6-1 slate. La Salle would either remain on top or would have a partner depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s FEU-Adamson match at 4:00 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan City. FEU and Adamson both hold 5-1 cards and the winner will join La Salle for the lead. Wednesday’s first game will feature Ateneo against University of Santo Tomas. Standings: DLSU 6-1, FEU 5-1, Adamson 5-1, UST 3-3, Ateneo 3-3, UE 2-5, NU 1-5, UP 1-5. – GMANews.TV
