Guiao thumbs down Toroman’s offer to scout for RP 5


MANILA, Philippines – Rajko Toroman’s championship experience in the FIBA Asia tournament may come in handy but Team Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao is passing up the Serbian mentor’s offer to scout for the team. This is because the fiery national coach believes his coaching staff is more than capable to do the scouting. “I appreciate his offer, but I think we have enough people in our staff who can scout for us," said Guiao in a text message to GMANews.TV. Guiao will rather utilize his deputies – Gee Abanilla and Kenneth Duremdes – to do the scouting chores for the RP quintet. The two also will most likely join team manager JB Baylon in China during the FIBA Asia meet’s drawing of lots on Wednesday to determine which bracket the Philippines will fall into. Four teams are already seeded in the tournament – defending champion Iran, which was previously handled by Toroman, Lebanon, South Korea and Kazakhstan. “We still don’t know kung sino ang makaka-grupo natin so we cannot assign Gee and Kenneth (for the scouting) yet," said Guiao. “We need two guys to do the scouting for us, the other one will take down notes while the other one will do the video so ideal na silang dalawa yung padala natin to do the scouting." Some of the Philippines’ potential rivals are currently playing in the East Asia Basketball tournament while opponents from the Middle East will also have their own tournament in Doha. Guiao, whose team is likewise seeing action in the William Jones Cup next month in Taipei, will carefully evaluate all his players, including new addition Japeth Aguilar. The 6’9 Aguilar also saw action for the Toroman-coached Smart-Gilas RP squad in the FIBA Champions Cup in Indonesia. His presence will definitely bolster the frontline of the all-pro team, whose tallest players are Asi Taulava and Mick Pennisi, both standing 6’9 and the only holdovers from the 2002 national squad. - GMANews.TV
