PBL: AddMix stays in the hunt for semis seat

Facing outright elimination drew the best out of the AddMix Transformer as they produced the most dominant win in years in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL). Alex Nuyles, Jeff Morial and Terre Guillermo came off the bench and combined for 37 points as the Transformers breezed through a 90-49 victory over Ani-FCA Agrinurture in Saturday’s PBL PG Flex-Erase Placenta Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

The AddMix defense also worked wonders for the team as they held Ani-FCA to only 19 points in the final half. The 41-point winning margin is the largest since Red Bull routed Montaña, 89-45, on May 17, 1999. The win was AddMix’s second in five games that moved them up to solo fifth in the standings. More importantly, the win kept the Transformers in the hunt for a semifinals seat in this season-opening conference. “We were struggling in most of our games because we have a number of new players who are still learning my system. This win, whether we took it by one point, is very important because we are in a must win games in our last three outings," said AddMix coach Leo Austria. The Cultivators officially dropped out of contention of advancing to the next round after suffering their fifth straight loss. Nuyles led his team with 17 points while Morial and Guillermo added 10 each as they compiled a huge 48-13 advantage in bench points. Figuring in two tough games, which both resulted to defeats, seemed to have zapped Agrinurture’s energy as Mark Cagoco emerged as the team’s lone double-digit scorer with 16. James Sena, another consistent double-digit scorer for the team, was held to just six points behind a 2-of -10 field goal shooting. Overall, the Cultivators shot just 29 percent from the field (17-of-59), including a disappointing 3-of-15 shooting in the third period as the Transformers turned a 40-30 halftime spread to a 62-37 bubble entering the final canto.
Scores: AddMix 90 – Nuyles 17, Canada 14, Morial 10, Guillermo 10, Ciriacruz 8, Colina 5, Margallo 5, Amparado 4, Cubo 3, Galinato 2, Ynion 2, Maliksi 2, Alvarez 2, Basilio 0. Ani-FCA 49 – Cagoco 16, Custodio 7, Sena 6, Pascual 4, Luanzon 3, Gelasque 3, Sevilla 2, Pascual 2, Acosta 2, Matias 2, Morales 2, Flores 0, Olocan 0. Quarter scores: 20-15; 40-30; 62-37; 90-49.
AddMix’s defense, which resulted to seven steals, was so suffocating that the Transformers prevented the Cultivators any fastbreak attempt. Ani-FCA also had 20 turnovers, 18 of them in the first three quarters that resulted to a 29-3 advantage in turnover points for Addmix. “We still have a good shot at the semifinals and what we need to do is to win over Pharex on Thursday and Cossack on our final game. I believe with this performance of my players, we have a solid chance of winning these games," added Austria. Wins are important among contending teams in this single round robin elimination since there will be no playoff and instead ties will be resolved using the quotient system. – GMANews.TV
