National Games show POC, PSC unity in sports

The 2011 Philippine National Games in Bacolod City will not only showcase the skills of the country's athletes but also the renewed cooperation and unity between the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). "There is a vast difference between the present Games and the previous ones," said POC chairman Monico Puentevella, who gave an update of the week-long event that will also serve as a tryout for the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG)-bound National athletes. "The difference between then and now is that the PSC is moving in consultation with the POC. Without this nothing will ever happen," said Puentevella, who was joined in the press briefing by PSC chairman Ricardo Garcia. "The Games are jointly held by the POC and PSC. We are partners in this event," added Garcia. Garcia said that simultaneously holding the Games with the national competitions for all National Sports Associations (NSAs) was a huge challenge for the POC and PSC. "But we managed to do it." Puentevella emphasized the importance of the Games for being one of the qualifying events of National athletes vying for spots in the PHL squad that will compete in the 26th SEAG in Palembang, Indonesia in November. "I might not send my weightlifters to the SEA Games if they failed to perform. This is how important the Games are," said Puentevella, who is also the Philippine Weightlifting Association president. PSC commissioner Jolly Gomez, the organizing committee chair, asked the Negrenses to show their support to all competing athletes in the cities of Bacolod, Bago, Silay and Talisay. "The only prize that our athletes will receive aside from medals is the adulation of the people and that is very important to us," said Gomez. – JVP, GMA News
