V-League: Philippine Army captures Open Conference crown

Philippine Army reasserted its mastery over San Sebastian College, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10, to complete a sweep and capture the Shakey's V-League Open Conference crown on Thursday at The Arena in San Juan City. "It is our first time to compete in the V-League and we ended up as champions," said Army coach Rico de Guzman, who admitted that he did not expect to top the season-ending conference. The Lady Troopers, who rallied for a 27-25 count in the first set, dropped the next two sets against a Lady Stags side that is determined to stretch the series to a Game 3 on Sunday. But Army regained their momentum in the fourth and forced a deciding fifth set where they zoomed to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. The Lady Troopers sealed the win thanks to miscues by San Sebastian, with Lady Stags guest player Jill Gustilo committing a service error while Thai impor Jeng Bualee's kill was ruled out. Army's victory earned them the chance to represent the Philippines in the five-nation invitational tournament, which is being organized by Shakey's here in Manila, on October 24 where they will be up against Southeast Asia's top spikers. Rachel Ann Daquis, who was named the finals Most Valuable Player, finished with 12 hits and eight service aces while former league MVP Mary Jean Balse tallied 14 hits, three blocks and two service aces. Bualee, San Sebastian's resident import, paced the team with 28 points while American reinforcement Lauren Ford added in 19 hits, five blocks and three aces. — JVP, GMA News
