Wushu master Catalan gives RP 4th gold


Rene Catalan gave the Philippines another gold medal in the 15th Asian Games after winning the -52 kg finals of the wushu competitions Thursday night. Catalan aggressively dominated Vietnam's Pham Quoc Vinh to win the first two rounds of the three-round match and added the fourth gold for the Philippines in the games which will officially end Friday. The Philippines won its first gold medal in men's 9-ball courtesy of Antonio Gabica, then boxers Violito Payla and Joan Tipon added one each. Another Filipino wushu contestant, Edward Folayang, will face Xu Yanfei of China in the men's -70 kg later in the night aiming for the fifth gold medal of the Philippines. Meanwhile, two other Filipino wushu players did not place well in the Men's Nanquan-Three Events Combined Nangun (Southern-style cudgel). Pedro Quina finished seventh among 20 contestants and Willy Wang landed at ninth. -GMANews.TV
