Mariano III rules college division of Leviste chessfest


Nelson Mariano III ruled the college division of the recently concluded 8th Dr. Jose Leviste Sr. Chess Festival held at the Ateneo Grade School Cafeteria. Mariano, the former UAAP Rookie of the Year from the University of the East, finished with 5.5 points after six rounds to beat Polytechnic University of the Philippines' Roldan Oriendo, who finished second. College of St. Benilde's Narquingel Reyes and Narquingden Reyes finished third and fourth, respectively. In the high school category, San Sebastian College's Paulo Cristobal grabbed the top prize with 5.5 points after a draw with runner-up Melwyn Baltazar of Calderon High School. Carlo Caranyangan of Arellano University finished third, followed by teammates Jose Castro, Kyz Llantada and Adamson's Daryl Samantilla. Sta. Rosa's Jasper Marce topped the grade school division with a perfect 6.0 score. Lourdes School of Mandaluyong's Andrew Sopungco placed second with 5.5 points. Seven players had the same 5.0 score in the grade school division, resulting to a tie from the third to 10th place. With the tiebreak rule applied, LICS's Kianjoo Macapagal emerged third, followed by PACO's Stephen Pangilinan, SMC's Dennis Guttierez III and Las Piñas native Israelito Rilloraza. The bi-annual tournament is a program of the Ateneo de Manila chess teams under GM Candidate and Ateneo Program Head for Chess Ildefonso Datu, with the support of Jose Leviste Jr. (Ateneo Chess Teams Alumni Chairman) and the Ateneo High School Class of 1961 (2011 Golden Jubilarians). The event is endorsed by Ateneo University Athletics Director Ricky Palou, and is held in honor of the memory of Dr. Jose P. Leviste Sr. (HS '33, AA '35), father of Jose P. Leviste Jr. (GS '57, HS '61, AB '65) and Mario P. Leviste (GS '69, HS '73). Special awards were given to Espiritu Santo Parochial School's John Michael Castillo (Top Under-6 player), John Rhuiz Bravo (Top Under-8 Player), Benjamin Ang (Top Under-10 Player), St. Paul College-Parañaque's Denise Lapuz (Top Under-10 Girl) and Ateneo's Brenna Mae Membrere (Top Lady–College). Recognition were also handed to exemplary Ateneo chess players. Cri Rayos (Top Under-8, Ateneo) and Elijah Derek Pilien (Top Under-10, Ateneo). Jose P. Leviste Jr. graced the closing ceremonies together with Ramon Leviste and Mara Leviste (AB Soc Sci 2000), grandchildren of the late Jose P. Leviste Sr. — JVP, GMA News
