UAAP: UST vs DLSU preview and live-scoring (round 2)

First round meeting: The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers simply had more weapons in a game that went more than the distance and into two overtime periods, versus the De La Salle University Green Archers, 84-82, last August 4. The back-and-forth game was nearly won in regulation, when LA Revilla hit what seemed like a buzzer-beater, but referees said that the shot did not count, putting five minutes back onto the clock. In the first overtime, turnovers proved to be DLSU's problem, with UST getting five of their nine points through Archer errors. La Salle compensated by hitting all three of their shots. Still, the game went down the line again, and this time it was Aljon Mariano who failed to connect on what could have been the last possession, forcing another overtime period. This was the period where La Salle's fatigue was most telling. LA Revilla missed three triple tries, and Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres flubbed a pair of free throws each. Meanwhile Mariano set about redeeming himself, hitting both of UST's field goals to give his side the hard-fought win. Key stats: Two stats stood out in the double-overtime thriller, and both pointed towards UST's eventual win. The Tigers out-shot DLSU from downtown, 9-of-23 for 39.1 percent versus 4-of-20 for 20 percent, and UST also converted at a better rate from the foul line, 9-of-15 for 60 percent, against 16-of-30, or 53.3 percent. Had Teng and Torres nailed those charities at the dawn of the second OT, things could have gone the Archers' way. UST's numbers have declined since then though. They now allow an average of 69.7 points per game, second-worst, in a tie with Adamson. They've never been a standout team on defense, but their numbers have declined to the point where opponents are shooting 40.2 percent against them from the field, 27.7 percent from beyond the arc. They're also dead last in terms of blocks with just 3.4 per game. DLSU's struggles on the other hand have been well-documented. As mentioned, they're hitting just 56.7 percent of their free throws, and they've turned the ball over 17.1 times. The latter number might improve should they get LA Revilla back from an injury, but if it's the rookie duo of Thomas Torres and Mark Tallo handling the rock when these two sides play, DLSU might be in trouble. UST needs to: Get Karim Abdul more involved in the offense. He's gone from 15 attempts per game from the field to just an average of nine over the first two games in round two. The team might also want to consider giving Louie Vigil more minutes as well, as Jeric Teng still isn't 100 percent back from his injury (3/16 FG in the second round). DLSU needs to: Hope LA Revilla and Yutien Andrada are back healthy. They'll need Revilla for scoring and controlling the tempo, while Andrada can help stop Abdul.
