The Tigers now tie the Far Eastern University Tamaraws at 2-0 atop the standings, while the Falcons slip to fourth with the De La Salle University Green Archers at 1-1.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Tigers made key adjustments on defense to neutralize Ingrid Sewa, the Falcons' Cameroonian center, who tortured them during the first two quarters. UST led by as much as 12 points in the final period but Adamson mounted a desperate comeback attempt near the end.

The Falcons, trailing by 10 with a minute and a half to play, dug in on defense as Don Trollano kept it close, nailing two triples in the final minute. Jeric Teng was then fouled in transition and missed two, but UST snared the rebound and Adamson was forced to foul him anew. This time Teng split, 64-59, with 35.6 ticks left.

Ar-raouf Julkipli pushed the ball upcourt and found Cabrera for yet another three-pointer, 64-62, with 30 seconds remaining. The Tigers then triggered the ball to Teng, who sank a fadeaway midrange jumper to make it a two-possession game with 16.8 seconds on the clock. Then on the other end, a hurried trey by Trollano did not connect.

This season's host team was then forced to foul Aljon Mariano, who split his charities, putting the game out of the Falcons' reach.

Kevin Ferrer led all scorers with 17 points, four rebounds and four blocks. Teng finished with 15 points and six rebounds.

"Sama nung first half namin, sobrang sama. Nag-adjust ako ng second half, at sa awa ng Diyos lumaban yung mga bata, 'di bumigay," said UST head coach Pido Jarencio. "Yung Adamson kasi, isa yan sa mga contender this season kaya kailangang manalo."

"Nung first half medyo nang-gigil kami, nagkanya-kanya kami," said Teng.

"Yung defense yung nagpa-panalo samin. Nag-full court press kami at marami kaming steals. Nawala yung advantage nila kay Sewa," he said.

Jarencio also had praise for the Falcons. "Grabe yung Trollano, naka-dalawang three-points, ang layo-layo. Eh nung ako naglalaro, hindi ako ganun kalayo tumira," he joked. "Mas malayo pa!" he added, to lighten the mood in the press room.

The Falcons could do no wrong in the opening minutes. They forced the Tigers into several miscues early for fast break points, and found their bigs in good position around the block. Ingrid Sewa and Rodney Brondial combined for 11 points while UST stayed alive courtesy of triples by Ed Daquioag and Kim Lo, 15-6.

Kevin Ferrer and Aljon Mariano came off the bench to right things for the Tigers, and the pair ended a four-minute scoring drought for their team. UST shored up on defense and held Adamson to just one field goal in the last three minutes, but it came at the expense of loose ball fouls. Daquioag and Bautista tallied two and three personal fouls, respectively, as the Tigers trailed, 22-18, after the first period.

Roider Cabrera opened the second quarter with a trey, but the game slowed down from there as the defense went up a notch. Midway through the quarter though, Sewa managed a put-back slam to give his team a jolt, followed by a steal and an open lay-up by Jericho Cruz to forge a 29-20 margin.

Karim Abdul countered shortly by capitalizing on bad rotations, but that was the easiest bucket the Tigers scored in the frame. A Mariano drive at the last second dampened the Falcons' run as Cruz and Abdul powered through on the previous possessions, to make it 34-26 at halftime.

Sewa tallied 13 points and six rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half. The Falcons shot 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from the field, while UST was held to 10-of-34 (29.4 percent). The Falcons also had a 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) advantage at the charity stripe against the Tigers' 3-of-4 (75 percent) clip.

After the break, the Falcons found themselves struggling against UST's ball pressure and zone defense. It led to transition points and crisper execution for UST, as Mariano facilitated buckets for Ferrer, Bautista, Teng and Abdul in a 17-4 run, including 14 unanswered, to jump ahead, 43-38.

Cabrera put out the fire with his second triple of the game with three minutes left to play in the period, but the Falcons were still reeling on offense. Ferrer then connected on a reverse lay-up with 48 seconds remaining, capping a 45-41 tally for UST heading into the final period.

The Tigers pressed on in the fourth quarter by making Adamson pay for gambling on defense and failing to get back in transition. Daquioag and Teng slashed to the hoop, combining for eight points in a 10-2 swing, 55-43.

Adamson called for time with six and a half minutes remaining, and began an 8-2 run following an ill-advised triple by Harry Petilos. While the Falcons had multiple offensive rebounds, UST forced them into inefficient shot attempts, taking a 59-51 lead in the final two minutes on charities by Ferrer.

Brondial replied with a wild drive on the other end, but UST kept cool and took care of business. Teng countered with a post-up basket from the right block, and Ferrer stripped Julkipli for an easy lay-in, 63-53, with a minute and a half remaining, before the Falcons made their last stand from three-point distance.

The Tigers finished shooting 25-of-68 (36.8 percent) from the floor, while Adamson fell to 22-of-64 (34.4 percent), including 10-of-35 in the second half.

The Falcons led 52-39 in rebounding, including 21-16 offensive.

UST committed less turnovers,16-22, but the Falcons led by a slim margin in turnover points, 16-15.

Jericho Cruz racked up 15 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Ingrid Sewa went scoreless in the second half to finish with 13 points and 10 boards. Roider Cabrera notched 11 points, while Rodney Brondial secured 14 rebounds to go with nine points. - RAF/AMD, GMA News
