San Beda’s Menor is NCAA player of the week

San Beda's spitfire guard Ogie Menor was chosen as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Press Corps's first Player of the Week in Season 83 for being a major force in San Beda College's two lopsided victories. In a statement Saturday, the media organization said that the prolific 20-year-old guard averaged 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and just a turnover in helping the Lions post a 91-69 opening day win over the host Jose Rizal Bombers and an 86-62 triumph over the Perpetual Help Altas just a couple of days ago. And Menor is doing that for a school oozing with some of collegiate basketball's stars--last year's rookie and MVP Sam Ekwe, 2006 Finals MVP Yousif Aljamal, Pong Escobal and talented sophomore Borgie Hermida just to name a few. That was enough to get him the nod of the media group, composed of sportswriters from some of the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids covering the oldest collegiate league in the land today. Menor edged the likes of teammate Ekwe--the 6'8" Nigerian who figured in a kicking incident Friday--and streak shooter RJ Jazul and veteran forward Bryan Faundo of Letran College, who is also unbeaten in two games to share the lead with the Mendiola-based quintet. This could be the breakout season for Menor, who toiled on his rookie year and in Season 82 when he was overshadowed by his more illustrious teammates in Ekwe and Aljamal. - GMANews.TV
