Azkals yield 3-1 result to Vietnam, enter Suzuki Cup semis as 2nd seed

The Philippines settled for second place in its Suzuki Cup group after bowing to host Vietnam, 3-1, in Hanoi on Friday.

The Azkals only needed a draw to secure the top seed, but the Vietnamese had other plans right from kickoff, with Ngo Hoang Thinh scoring early for a 1-nil advantage.

Vietnam, which had lost to the Azkals in each of the last two editions of the Suzuki Cup, buried the Philippines deeper early in the second half, scoring at the 51st and 58th minute for a 3-nil lead.

The Azkals got one back at the 60th minute with a Paul Mulders goal. But the Philippines couldn't make headway the rest of the way, allowing the home team to take the top seed in the group.

The Philippines settled for second place after wins against Laos and Indonesia. The Azkals will play the top seed of Group B — likely regional powerhouse Thailand — in the home-and-away semifinals. The home match will be held on December 6 at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. — JST, GMA News
