Archer Gab Moreno nails first-ever Philippines gold in Youth Olympic Games

Luis Gabriel Moreno made history on Sunday as the first-ever Filipino gold medalist in the Youth Olympic games after joining forces with China's Li Jiaman to rule the mixed international team event in the archery competition in Nanjing, China.

Moreno and Li won with a 6-nil victory over the team of Cynthia Freywald of Germany and Muhamad Zolkepeli of Malaysia.

Ranked 30th out of 32nd out of male archers in the competition, Moreno had modest expectations coming into the Youth Olympics.

"I didn't expect to win anything here. I just gave my best," said Moreno, the flag-bearer of the Philippines during the opening ceremonies.

Moreno made the winning shots that sealed the victory for the Philippines-China team.

The victory capped a madcap run for the tandem, which beat Venezuela-Slovakia and Azerbaijan-Japan earlier in the day in the first two rounds.

Moreno and Li defeated Finland-Canada in the semifinals before sweeping the title matchup. — JST, GMA News
