What Hidilyn Diaz will do with P5-M prize from PHL government

After making history with a silver medal in the Rio Olympics, Hidilyn Diaz is set to get at least P5 million from the Philippine government as part of the incentive program for athletes.

What will the weightlifter from Zamboanga City do with the money?

In an interview on "State of the Nation" on Monday, Diaz detailed her plans for the cash.

"Bibilhin ko 'yung lupa sa bahay namin," she said. "Tapos magtatayo ako ng weightlifting gym."

She said she wanted to be able to train more weightlifters from the Philippines "to bring more world medalists, more Olympians."

In the interview, Diaz said Filipino athletes need to get the best advice from experts in strength and condition, rehab, sports psychology, and nutrition to be able to compete at the highest levels.

She expressed hope that her victory could serve as an inspiration for Filipino athletes about what is possible.

No idea

In the same interview, Diaz related how she had no idea that she had already won silver during the competition because she was busy praying.

She was surprised to see the reaction of the Korean squad after Chinese weightlifter Li Yajun failed in her attempt, giving Diaz the silver. —JST, GMA News
