Janelle Mae Frayna becomes PHL’s first woman chess grandmaster


Janelle Mae Frayna, a 20-year-old chess player from Legazpi City, officially became the first woman grandmaster of the Philippines after a stellar performance at the 42nd World Chess Olympiad at Baku Azerbaikan.

Frayna, a psychology student at the Far Eastern University, had a 2281 rating at the end of the competition, posting four wins, four draws, and one loss in nine games.

A Hero's Welcome is being organized for Frayna in her hometown. She will also be receiving a cash reward. — Aya Tantiangco/RSJ, GMA News
