The Philippine women's volleyball team scored its first win in the Asian Games since 1982 after defeating Hong Kong, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22, in Jakarta on Thursday.

After absorbing straight-set defeats to Japan and Thailand to open the tournament, the Pinay squad bounced back strong behind stars Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago.

The last Philippine volleyball win in the quadrennial event came in New Delhi 36 years ago, when it defeated host India in three sets.

The Philippines still has a chance to advance to the quarterfinals in the tournament as it closes its schedule in the group stages against host Indonesia on Saturday. —JST, GMA News
