Palace vows to listen to stakeholders in forming new panel

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang on Thursday promised to listen to inputs from stakeholders in forming a new peace negotiating panel to deal with Moro rebels in Mindanao when the time comes.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said they will also "improve" their communication efforts in conducting public consultations on the peace process.

"Para di masabi na di alam ng panel natin ano ang dapat pagusapan (We will listen to stakeholders in forming the new panel so the panel cannot be accused of not knowing what they are doing)," Ermita told dzRH radio in an interview.

Government scuttled its negotiating panel Wednesday following the mess over the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which was questioned before the Supreme Court.

But the MILF said the peace panel was turned into a sacrificial lamb, as it was impossible for the panel to make decisions without the knowledge of its superiors.

On the other hand, Ermita said the new panel will be constituted only when there is a "positive development" in the peace process. He did not elaborate.

"Tulad ng lahat na negotiation, kailangan na kung may pagkakataon may positive development inaasa sa kabilang panig magre-reconstitute tayo ng bagong panel para fresh vision, fresh approach, bagong policy and direction," he said.
