Teachers rap GSIS lawyer for 'libelous' statements

September 18, 2008 6:52am
MANILA, Philippines - Militant teachers on Wednesday rapped a spokeswoman of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for "libelous" statements for saying they were "protesters for hire."

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) branded as "baseless" the claims of GSIS spokeswoman Estrella Elamparo branding them as paid protesters in the payroll of the Lopez family.

"Ms. Elamparo's pronouncements are typical expressions of the utter contempt she and her boss Winston Garcia hold for the GSIS members who pay their salaries. The ongoing wave of protest actions against GSIS is in fact a genuine expression of the widespread anger felt by millions of GSIS members against the unfair and unjust policies implemented by Winston Garcia since 2003," ACT chairman Antonio Tinio said in a statement on the ACT website.

He said the GSIS under Garcia has been the subject of many complaints, including the premium-based policy, the Claims and Loans Interdependency Policy, the revised housing policy, and many more.

ACT and other groups had been criticizing the GSIS over the policies in recent weeks.

"Unfortunately, GSIS has refused to listen and refuses to do anything about it," Tinio said.

On the other hand, Tinio said they will accompany Elamparo and Garcia to any public school so they can find for themselves if the teachers'
complaints are real.

"We will gladly accompany Ms. Elamparo and her boss Winston Garcia to any public school of their choosing so they can meet face-to-face with the GSIS members that they have chosen to disrespect. Then we'll find out whether or not their anger is genuine," he said. - GMANews.TV
