September 29, 2008 8:58am

MANILA, Philippines - A sub-provincial jail guard in Laoang town in Northern Samar is in hot water for shooting dead an inmate, a radio report said early Monday.

Radio dzBB reported that Manolito Bulan, 44, faces murder charges for shooting dead Rudy Baluyot, 36, with his Armalite rifle over the weekend.

But Bulan insisted he acted in self-defense, saying Baluyot tried to stab him with an ice pick, and that Baluyog ignored his warning shots.

Recovered from the scene of the incident were an ice pick and eight empty shells from an Armalite rifle, the radio report said.

Bulan surrendered to the police after the incident and turned over his M16 weapon, along with a magazine loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition. - GMANews.TV
