(Update) Another alleged Sayyaf bandit in Drilon kidnapping arrested
MANILA, Philippines - Another alleged member of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf was captured by authorities during the weekend in the southern province of Sulu.
In an interview with radio dzBB, Lt. Colonel Ernesto Torres Jr, Armed Forces information chief, identified the alleged bandit as Marcial "Totoh" Jabarut, alias Abu Cesar who was arrested by the Sixth Marine Battalion Landing Team Saturday evening.
Torres said that Jabarut, was a member of the Abu Sayyaf since 2000 and is under the command of a certain Kumander Tahil Salih.
Jabarot, together with the three Abu Sayyaf members captured last Friday, were all behind last June's abduction of broadcast journalist Ces Drilon, cameramen Jimmy Encarnacion and Angelo Valderama, and Mindanao-based university professor Octavio Dinampo in Sulu.
Arrested last Friday were Asma Awang, Makambian Sakilan and Tagayan Sakilan, all natives of Talipao town, a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf group, according to Sr Supt Julasirim Kasim, the provincial police chief
In a separate report, Navy spokesperson Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said Jabarut was captured 9 p.m. Saturday after he was spotted by the 36th Marine Company at the vicinity of a small grocery at downtown Jolo.
“Despite sporting longer hair and beard, he was still recognized by the troops. A squad of Marines in uniform was immediately marshaled and swooped to Sincere Grocery Store at 11:10 p.m. Totoh did not resist seeing its infutility and meekly surrendered,” Arevalo said.
An immediate check by Marines of photos on file obtained from Abu Sayyaf's captured video revealed the suspect's identity, Arevalo added.
Arevalo said Jabarut initially denied being a member of the Abu Sayyaf. But his denial was later negated when the authorities played before him a captured video on file.
"He afforded to smile and admitted he was the man on the film," Arevalo said.
Arevalo added that the group behind the Drilon kidnapping has disintegrated to elude the pursuing Marines. - GMANews.TV
