Mauling victim wants DAR chief, son placed on preventive suspension
MANILA, Philippines - The camp of Delfin dela Paz, the alleged mauling victim of Agrarian Reform Sec. Nasser Pangandaman's sons and their bodyguards, will ask the Office of the Ombudsman to place the Cabinet member under a preventive suspension over the mauling incident.
Radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen quoted the dela Pazes' lawyer Raymond Fortun as saying that the petition for Pangandaman's preventive suspension was meant to prevent the official from influencing ongoing proceedings regarding the mauling incident.
Fortun also said they will likewise seek the preventive suspension of the DAR chief's son, Nasser Pangandaman Jr, who is the mayor of Masiu town in Lanao del Sur.
Fortun said they will charge the two with grave misconduct before the Ombudsman on Wednesday.
On the other hand, lawyer Ted Pastrada who represents the Pangandamans said the petition to suspend the DAR chief and the Lanao del Sur mayor is unfair as they have remained silent over the incident.
Pastrana also said calls for the DAR chief's resignation over the incident at the Valley Golf Course and Country Club in Antipolo City last December 26 are likewise unreasonable as the incident was the result of a misunderstanding over golf and had nothing to do with the Pangandamans' official duty.
For his part, the DAR chief said he no longer wants to speak on the matter as both camps have already filed criminal charges against each other before the Antipolo City prosecutor's office earlier during the day.
In an interview over radio dzBB, the elder Pangandaman reiterated his apology but maintained that his sons did not instigate the scuffle at the golf course.
"Ang masasabi ko lang po diyan nag-file na po ng kaso ang mga dela Paz, nagfile na po ng kaso ang aking mga anak. Ako po'y nakikiusap sana na di na po sana muna ako magcomment dito (The only thing I can say is that the dela Pazes have filed their case and my sons have also filed their case. I am appealing to everyone not to seek my comment for now)," said Pangandaman.
"For the meantime po again would like to reiterate, I would like to extend my apologies to the public. This was an unfortunate incident but I can assure you po it was not my sons who instigated the incident," the DAR chief added. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
