Palace says it's premature to suspend DAR chief

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang on Monday said it is premature to place Agrarian Reform Sec. Nasser Pangandaman under preventive suspension over his sons' involvement in a scuffle at an Antipolo City golf course late last December.

Radio dzBB's Aileen Intia quoted Deputy Presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo as saying it is too early for Pangandaman to be suspended as he is not even included as a respondent in the criminal charges filed by the camp of Delfin dela Paz.

Dela Paz is one of the victims of a mauling incident inside the Valley Golf and Country Club last December 26 allegedly instigated by Pangandaman's sons Nasser Jr and Hussein, along with their bodyguards.

Fajardo made the statement after dela Paz's lawyer Raymond Fortun said they want the Ombudsman to place under preventive suspension the DAR Secretary and his son Nasser Jr, who is mayor of Masiu town in Lanao del Sur.

The Dela Paz camp will file before the Ombudsman on Wednesday a grave misconduct complaint against the Pangandamans.

Earlier in the day, Fortun filed two counts of slight physical injuries and two counts of violation of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act against Nasser Jr and his brother Hussein for allegedly beating up dela Paz and his 14-year-old son Bino after a scuffle inside the golf course.

The Pangandamans' bodyguards are likewise facing a slight physical injuries charge.

Fortun said they will amend their complaint to include the DAR chief if they find sufficient evidence that he should be held liable for the alleged mauling incident.

Roughly two hours after Fortun filed the complaints before the Antipolo City prosecutor's office, the Pangandamans filed counter-charges of physical injuries and threats against the dela Pazes. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV
