MPD deploys men as farmers march to Mendiola

MANILA, Philippines - Manila police will deploy anti-riot teams at the Chino Roces Bridge near Malacañang to block farmers planning a march there to mark the 22nd anniversary of the Mendiola massacre.

Radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo on Wednesday reported that Manila Police District head Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales ordered the deployment after farmers failed to present the proper documentation to stage a protest rally in the area.

The report said Rosales urged farmers' groups to instead hold their commemoration activities at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, which is considered a freedom park.

Anti-riot police were deployed to España Avenue in Sampaloc, Morayta near the University Belt, and Plaza Miranda.

Rosales pointed out that the city government under Mayor Alfredo Lim only allows rallies without permits at Mendiola only on weekends and holidays.

The group marched to Mendiola to commemorate the Jan. 22, 1987 Mendiola massacre where government forces violently dispersed and opened fire on farmers marching to Malacañang. At least 13 of the farmers were killed and several wounded in that confrontation. - GMANews.TV
