Farmers prevented from holding rally at Mendiola
MANILA, Philippines – Marching farmers commemorating the 22nd anniversary of the Mendiola Massacre failed to reach the historic Chino Roces Bridge in Manila after police blocked their path Thursday morning.
GMA News’ Joseph Morong reported over QTV’s Balitanghali that the farmers from the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) decided to hold their rally on Morayta Street after they were stopped there by Manila Police District personnel.
The television report said the farmers came from the Department of Agrarian Reform office in Quezon City where they demanded the "genuine land reform."
Last December, Congress passed a joint resolution extending the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) for only six months, with land distribution being made voluntary on the part of land owners.
The same television report added that aside from marking the anniversary of the Mendiola Massacre, the farmers will also include burning of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s photos as part of their protest actions.
In a separate report, radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo said the number of farmers who participated in the mass demonstration reached about 1,500.
