Report: Mayor denies pledging support for Bolante’s gubernatorial bid
MANILA, Philippines - A town mayor has denied reports saying he has pledged support to former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn Bolante in his gubernatorial bid in the province of Capiz in the 2010 pools, an online report said.
Bolante became controversial after he was tagged as the brains behind the P728-million fertilizer scam.
The News Today reported that Panay town mayor Dante Bermejo also denied attending a dinner hosted by Bolante last Feb. 28 at Villa Patria.
“I was not there and I’ve never pledged my support to Bolante," Bermejo said, adding that at the time of the dinner, he was in Cebu City with Sen. Manuel Roxas II, Governor Victor Tanco Sr. and provincial tourism officer Al Teroso to attend the opening ceremony of “One Visayas" in Cebu City during that time.
Bermejo also said he never met former Gov. Jose Borda and Bolante to talk about Bolante's political plans in the 2010 election.
Ealier, Borda said the vice governor, nine incumbent municipal mayors in the second district of Capiz and five others declared support for Bolante’s bid for governor next year.
Borda had said those who pledged support for Bolante are Vice Governor Felipe Barredo, mayors Joselito Escutin (Dao), Roger Flores (Cuartero), Leslie Warren Benjamen (Dumarao), Lilia Castro (Dumalag), Rosemarie Gardose (Tapaz), Ethel Jinon (Jamindan), Jose Alba (Mambusao), Ipe Yap (Ivisan), and Arturo Orosco Sr. (Sapian).
Others included former Sigma Mayor Roberto Sualog, Incumbent Vice Mayor Victoria Quirao, Former Panay Vice Mayor and now Sangguniang Bayan (SB) Member Edwin Benliro.
For his part, Borda said he never mentioned the presence of Bermejo, former Pontevedra Mayor Jojie Avelino and Board Member Winston Advincula during the dinner and that he never said that they pledged support to Bolante.
“I think I was only misquoted when I was interviewed about the issue," Borda said in an interview on RMN-dyVR.
Still, Borda admitted saying that he expects Bermejo, Avelino and Advincula to support Bolante, although he was not sure of it. - GMANews.TV
