MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is studying the possibility of removing Hong Kong columnist Chip Tsao from its blacklist after he apologized for calling the country a "nation of servants" in his magazine column.

In a text message to reporters on Sunday, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Eduardo Malaya said they might ask the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to lift the entry ban against Tsao, who earned the ire of many Filipinos, including government officials, for his alleged racial slur.

“In view of the recent formal apology by Mr. Chip Tsao, the [Department of Foreign Affairs] is studying the recommendation of the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong for the [BI] to lift the ban on the possible entry of Mr. Tsao to the Philippines," Malaya said.

The BI last Monday issued Immigration Order 09-219 prohibiting Tsao from entering the Philippines for his alleged derogatory piece against Filipinos. The column appeared in his "The War at Home" column in HK Magazine last March 27.

Last Wednesday, Tsao approached Philippine consulate officials and representatives of the Filipino community in Hong Kong to personally extend his “most sincere apologies for the offense he had caused."

In his text message on Sunday, Malaya noted that Tsao expressed interest to visit the country during the meeting with Filipinos. - with Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV
