Failon househelpers face NBI probe

May 5, 2009 3:06pm
MANILA, Philippines – Government agents on Tuesday interviewed members of Ted Failon’s household in connection with the April 16 death of Failon's wife, Trinidad Arteche Etong.

Pacifico Apacible and Carlota Morbos dropped by the office of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Manila to give their statement on Mrs. Etong's shooting.

In his report, GMA’s John Consulta said Apacible and Morbos were accompanied by their lawyer Kristine Tiangco.

The NBI seeks to determine if the two house helpers’ accounts would jibe with other pieces of testimonial and physical evidence so far gathered by the investigators.

NBI spokesman Ricardo Diaz said that most of the evidence already in their possession bolsters the suicide angle in the death of Mrs. Etong, who was found in one of the bathrooms of their Quezon City home last April 15 with a gunshot wound on her head. She was rushed to the New Era General Hospital where she succumbed to cranial injury the next day.

Diaz however said the bureau still has to study the remaining specimens of handwriting and ballistic reports to come up with a concrete conclusion. He said the investigation would be completed by Friday and its results released on Monday.

Investigators retrieved a letter of apology supposedly written by Mrs. Etong two nights before she died. Failon and some of the couple’s friends have already hinted that financial problems may have caused Mrs. Etong’s "suicide."

Apacible and Morbos were among the respondents in the obstruction of justice case filed by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD). The complaint, which also included Failon as a respondent, was junked by the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV
