MANILA, Philippines – In order to help in sports development, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) shall be introducing Olympic events like boxing, fencing and archery in its 2009-2010 calendar.

“Sports competition will be introduced in the fields of boxing, fencing and archery," said league president Fr. Mat de Jesus of host San Beda College on Saturday. “These will be introduced as demonstration sports."

A few years back, the NCAA introduced soft tennis as demonstration sport in the league.

“The NCAA now is more than just big in terms of number," said the San Beda rector. “The NCAA now is greater than it ever was because it has developed itself as difference-making force in developing sports, promoting sportsmanship, harnessing competitive spirit, forging strong inter-collegiate ties and realizing educational synergy."

Boxing shall be implemented with the help of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

“It’s a welcome development having boxing in the NCAA," said ABAP secretary-general Patrick Gregorio.
