July 31, 2009 3:42pm

Two students drowned while two remain missing after the strong current of a river carried them away in the central Philippine province of Iloilo before noon Friday.

Radio dzBB's Iloilo affiliate reported that the incident occurred amid a heavy downpour about 11:30 a.m. at Miag-ao town.

All the victims are students of the Southern Iloilo Polytechnic College in Miag-ao.

The fatalities were identified as Marites Rabillo and Tetchie Escariaso. Still missing are Desiree Damacolde and Sarah Shiela Provido.

Three students managed to swim to safety. They were identified as Henry Rodrigo, 20; Luigi Manayag, 21; and Edison Gallon, 22.

Initial investigation showed the students were bathing at the river when the current suddenly washed them away. - GMANews.TV
