'Santi' floods swamp Laguna again, mayor seeks help via chopper
Floods caused by Typhoon Santi (Mirinae) swamped several communities in Laguna, forcing residents to clamber to the roofs of their houses in Sta. Cruz town early Saturday.
Sta. Cruz town mayor Ariel Magcalas appealed to the National Disaster Coordinating Council to send in rubber boats and helicopters to rescue stranded residents.
“Madaling araw umapaw ang tubig ilog ... Ngayon bumaba na (pero) nadagdagan ang 13 barangay na may tubig, binaha ngayon (The river overflowed before dawn today. The floodwaters had gone down but many villages are flooded)," Magcalas said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said many of his constituents are still reeling from floods brought by tropical storm Ondoy (Ketsana) last September 26.
The mayor said that because of the floods, many of the residents climbed to the roofs of their houses and are waiting to be rescued.
“Ang iba nasa bubong ng kanilang bahay (Floods are so high the residents in some areas had to go to the roofs of their houses)," he added.
He said they need help via rubber boats or helicopters.
“'Di kami makagalaw, di biro ang tubig. Ang taas ng ilog ngayon, kailangan ng tulong (We cannot move, this is no joke. The water is so high, we need help)," he said.
A report on dzRH radio said the flooding prompted local officials to evacuate other families to the local covered court and to the capitol’s grounds.
The dzRH report said roads in Los Baños area in Laguna were flooded and not passable to light vehicles. Only vehicles of the Department of Public Works and Highways can cross these roads.
Power was also out in several parts of Laguna since 3 a.m. - GMANews.TV
