Pagasa expects fine weather during Christmas

December 16, 2009 8:00am
Filipinos can expect generally fine weather as cyclones have little chance of forming during the Christmas holidays, state weather forecasters said Wednesday.

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecaster Elvie Enriquez said cyclones, if any, will likely form in the south.

"Bihirang-bihira ang namumuong sama ng panahon sa ganitong panahon. Inaasahan natin maganda ang panahon din hanggang Kapaskuhan (Formation of cyclones at this time of the year is a rare occurrence. So we expect fine weather during the Christmas holidays)," Enriquez said in an interview on dzBB radio.

“If ever there are weather disturbances, they will likely form in the south, but they are likely to dissolve when they encounter cold air from the north," she added.

Pagasa, which earlier forecast at least one cyclone to pass through the country in December, said that except for a wind convergence affecting Eastern Visayas, there is no weather disturbance affecting the country as of this time.

"Eastern Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy except for isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and coming from the northeast and east over Visayas.

Coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough, it added.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas except during thunderstorms. - LBG, GMANews.TV
