University of Santo Tomas blasted Ateneo, 1-0, on Sunday to hold the lead after the first round of the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s football tournament at the Ateneo field. Mar Oscar Mangcal scored the marginal basket in the 72nd minute, giving the Tigers 13 points on four wins and a draw after four matches.

UST coach Marjo Allado expressed satisfaction with the overall performance of his team as the Tigers had a young core and had to endure injuries to their veteran players. “I like their attitude and character in the first round. Our target is to reach the finals and so far, we are halfway there. But I expect the other teams to adjust against us in the second round," said Allado in Filipino. The Tigers took the men’s football crown two years ago but did not land a spot in the finals last year won by University of the Philippines. Ateneo ended the first round with six points (2-3-0 win-loss-draw). In the second game, University of the East finally landed on the win column after whitewashing De La Salle, 5-0. The Red Warriors took the W after dropping their first four games to gain three points at the end of the first round joining De La Salle. - GMANews.TV
