University of Sto. Tomas tries to end long years of frustration as it goes for its first-ever UAAP softball title in the UAAP against defending champion Adamson Saturday in the last day of the elimination round at the UST Field. The match is set at 1 p.m. with the many-time runner-up Tigresses seeking to complete a 10-0 sweep of the elims and the outright championship.
âThis is the game that mattered most. We have come this far and we will definitely give it our best shot," said coach Sandy Barredo whose wards are also out to prove that their 5-2 win over the Lady Falcons (8-1) in the first round was no fluke. Barredo ordered a rigid practice session Friday to ensure that the players are in their best shape, physically and mentally, for this tension-filled game. The Tigresses got close calls in their previous wins over Ateneo and UP, whom they both defeated by just one run, 3-2 and 4-3, respectively, and they hope to dish out a better performance against the Lady Falcons. âEverybody is praying that we lose but luck continues to be on our side," said Barredo. âWe still have the momentum for this game and we will try to be at our best against Adamson." The Lady Falcons are expected to go all out to prevent a UST sweep and keep their own bid for a second straight softball title alive. A win by the Adamson will forge a Final Four with UST and Adamson already assured of the twice-to beat-advantage against the next two teams.
âThis is a do-or-die, no-tomorrow game for us. In our first meeting, we were not able to make a decent hit. I just hope our batters will show up for this important game," said Lady Falcons coach Ana Santiago. Out to lead UST is veteran hurler Aiza Dela Torre, who in the team's last won game limited the Lady Maroons to just a single hit in seven innings. On the other hand, Adamson can choose from Julie Marie Muyco, Erica Escanuela and Rissa Bernardo to start for this game. âThey (Adamson softbelles) have been warming up their pitchers in their last few games and they may use any of their pitchers for Saturday's game. But we are prepared and ready to face the challenge," Barredo said. First match for the day will be between Ateneo and UE at 9 am, followed by UP and La Salle. - GMANews.TV
