SC extends Bulacan status quo for a week
Bulacan Governor Joselito Mendoza gets to stay in office for another week as the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday failed to rule on the province’s governorship row.
SC administrator and spokesperson Jose Midas Marquez said at a press briefing that the magistrates failed to rule on the merits of the case during the day's en banc session and decided to extend the status quo ante order it issued to Mendoza last week.
"The status quo ante order was extended because they were not able to resolve the issue today. There are still other opinions coming in," Marquez said.
The SC is expected to rule on the issue in next week’s en banc session, he added.
The SC issued Tuesday last week a seven-day status quo ante order in favor of Mendoza, preventing his rival, former Agrarian Reform Secretary Roberto Pagdanganan, from taking over as Bulacan governor.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec), after a recount, declared Pagdanganan as the winner in the May 2007 elections by more than 4,000 votes against Mendoza. — with Andreo Calonzo/KBK/RSJ, GMANews.TV
