DFA names Filipino evacuees from Libya

February 27, 2011 5:36pm
The Department of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon issued a partial list of Filipinos who crossed over to Tunisia from strife-torn Libya and are now waiting for repatriation to the Philippines.

Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario also met with Tunisian Deputy Chief of Protocol Mohamed Ben Salah and Tunisian business leader Noureddine Ayed to fine-tune the Philippine government's evacuation program for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Libya.

Del Rosario, Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Esteban Conejos Jr., Philippine Ambassador to Libya Alejandrino Vicente, and a DFA team flew to Jerba, the Tunisian city closest to the Libyan border, and then proceeded by land to the border to facilitate the cross-over of Filipinos into Tunisia.

Del Rosario and Conejos departed Manila for Tunisia to oversee the Philippine government's efforts to bring Filipinos out of Libya in the quickest way possible.

The DFA on Sunday afternoon also released the names of Filipinos who had crossed the Libya-Tunisia border at Ras al-Jedir.

A DFA team received them at the border and arranged for their flight home, the DFA said:
