Pinoy grandmaster So breaks into win column in Asian Continental chessfest
Grandmaster Wesley So finally flashed his old, deadly form to subdue Fide Master Javad Alavi Sayed of Iran in the third round to keep his hopes alive in the 10th Asian Continental Individual chess championship at the Hotel Pardisan in Masshad, Iran Wednesday.
So, seeded third behind GMs Rustan Kasimdhanov of Uzbekistan and Krishnan Sasikiran of India, played well with the white pieces to beat his lower-rated Iranian rival and improve his total to two points on one win and two draws in this tough, nine-round tournament.
The 17-year-old Filipino champion from Bacoor, Cavite, opened his campaign with back-to-back draws against No. 28 seed GM Anuar Ismagambetov of Kazakhstan in the first round and No. 26 seed GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam the following round.
GM Darwin Laylo whipped FM Jwan Bakr of Syria and GM John Paul Gomez routed International Master Gao Rui of China to keep their hopes alive in this 50-player competition organized by the Asian Chess Federation and hosted by the Iranian Chess Federation.
Laylo matched So’s record with two points.
GM Mark Paragua settled for a draw with FM Ali Hussein Al Hussein of Iraq, while IM Oliver Barbosa battled to a draw with GM Ehsna Ghaemmaghami of Iran to complete a near-perfect day for the Filipinos.
Paragua, Gomez and Barbosa all have 1.5 points.
Fifth seed GM Bu Xiangzhi of Chian dumped GM ParimarjanNegi of India to grab the solo lead with perfect score of three points.
