Bullpups, Baby Falcons score contrasting wins

National University and Adamson University scored contrasting wins on Tuesday at the start of the UAAP juniors basketball tournament at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

A revamped NU Bullpups shocked last year's losing finalist University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Cubs, 63-59, in overtime while the Adamson Baby Falcons coasted to an 83-64 triumph over the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons.

The Bullpups led for the entire game but allowed the Tiger Cubs to comeback in the fourth that ended at 53-all.

Ralph Tristian Tansignco led the rejuvenated Bullpups with 20 points and Rafael Lorenzo Busa added 10 markers. Paul Bernard Baliton had an all-around game of seven points, nine rebounds and five assists while Harvey Subrabas grabbed 12 rebounds.

Emmanuel Nicko Bahia finished with 25 points and six rebounds to lead UST's losing cause. Paolo Florentin and Vaughn Jorem Soriano combined for 15 points while Joshua Almajeda grabbed eight rebounds.

Adamson, which placed sixth last season, also opened up its Season 74 campaign with an 83-64 dumping of UPIS.

The Baby Falcons, which opened with a 15-9 lead after one quarter, dominated the Junior Maroons in the second period to post a 51-23 advantage at the turn. Adamson entered the final canto holding a 63-50 spread.

The Baby Falcons also drew 13 points each from El-Jay Canuel, Bryan Quipse and William Rosebelt Polican. Polican and Quipse also grabbed 12 and 10 rebounds each.

Kim Rico Cinco tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds while Paolo Joshua Ancheta added 16 markers for UPIS. Franco Abenojar finished with 14 points and grabbed a game-high 16 boards.

Women's basketball action opens Wednesday also at the Blue Eagle gym with NU facing Ateneo at 9 a.m., UP taking on UE at 11 a.m., defending champion Adamson battling UST at 1 p.m., and FEU going up against La Salle at 3 p.m. - JVP, GMA News
