The Philippines' competitive showing in the first round of the Homeless World Cup has led to them being grouped with football powerhouses. After an opening day 4-3 defeat against Slovenia, the Philippines won two consecutive matches on Day 2 against the United States (4-3) and Ghana (4-3). On the third day of the competition, the Philippines opened up with an 8-2 domination of Switzerland before suffering a 5-2 defeat against Group H leader Netherlands. It was not all bad news after the defeat for the Filipinos, as match referee Ronald Sinclair from Australia personally awarded the Spirit of the Sport medal to Philippine team member Jeffrey Guelas after their game against the Dutch. In a Facebook message to Homeless World Cup Philippine Team supporters, Homeless World Cup Philippines director Bill Shaw shared that the award was given "for exceptional sportsmanship on the playing field. This was after Jeffrey's show of fair play and respect during the game." Azkals team manager Dan Palami is in Paris to personally watch the team compete. It has been reported in the Homeless World Cup team's official Facebook page that the team's co-captain, Janrick Soriano, has been invited by Palami to join the Under-23 national team. Because of their 3-2 standing at the end of the first round, Team Philippines earned a spot in Group C, along with defending Homeless World Cup champions Brazil, Portugal, Scotland, Croatia and Poland. The first game for the Philippines in the second round will be on Wednesday, 7:20 pm (Manila time) against Croatia. - JVP, GMA News
