October 4, 2011 10:41am
Prices of fish and vegetables went up in markets in Metro Manila Tuesday, days after Typhoons Pedring (Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae) pounded northern Luzon.

At the Libertad Public Market in Pasay City, vendors asked for understanding from customers for the high prices, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.

The radio report said prices of some vegetables went up by more than three times as of Tuesday morning.

It said prices of onion leeks went up from P60 a kilo to as high as P200 per kilo.

Spring onion prices went up from P120 a kilo to P200 a kilo.

Prices of cauliflower went up from P80 to P140 per kilo while sayote prices went up from P20 to P45 a kilo.

Baguio beans were sold at P80 a kilo from the normal P40 a kilo, while prices of potatoes went up from P35 to P50 per kilo, while those of tomatoes went up from P40 to P70 a kilo.

However, prices of other vegetables remained stable, including imported onions (P50 a kilo), garlic (P50 a kilo), and calamansi (P25 a kilo).

Prices of fish also went up, including sapsap (P150 to P180 a kilo), dalagang bukid (P120 to P150 a kilo), hasa-hasa (P120 to P140 a kilo), and tulingan (P110 to P120 a kilo).

Authorities earlier warned traders against exploiting the situation by jacking up prices of their products.

The Trade Department earlier said it is sending teams to monitor prices of basic goods to make sure any price hike will be reasonable.

Trade Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya also said they are working with the Agriculture Department to bring in vegetables from Southern Luzon and Mindanao. — RSJ, GMA News
