74th UAAP fencing opens Friday

Fencing action in the 74th UAAP gets going Friday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium starting with competitions in the individual and team events—épée, foil and sabre—in the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The fencing competitions will run until Monday with the boys’ and girls’ individual and team foil, epee and sabre and women’s sabre to be held on Saturday. University of the Philippines (UP) is the defending men’s champion, while UE is the reigning titlist in the women’s and juniors categories. UE holds the most fencing titles in the UAAP with seven in the men’s, five in the women’s and one in juniors. UP has won the women’s crown five times. Ateneo clinched the women’s crown in 2006, while University of Santo Tomas won back-to-back men’s titles in 2007 and 2008. Far Eastern University has one men’s crown in 2004.
