CA panel defers acting on DSWD chief's confirmation

December 7, 2011 10:18am
A panel of the bicameral Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday deferred acting on the confirmation of "Dinky" Juliano-Soliman as secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Rep. Luis Villafuerte, who chairs the CA committee on labor, employment, and social welfare, made the motion to suspend Wednesday's hearing on Soliman's appointment after Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago asked for the same.

The hearing has been rescheduled to December 14.

Earlier in the hearing, no other members of the CA panel had questions directly for Soliman.

Villafuerte and Alagad Party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta only asked Soliman in brief about her alleged involvement in a group that benefited from a government bond flotation in 2001.

Senator Edgardo Angara had earlier said that the state should look into Soliman's alleged involvement in the Caucus of NGO networks (Code NGO), which supposedly earned a P1.4-billion commission from the P10-billion Poverty Eradication and Alleviation Certificate (PEACe) bonds.

Soliman was the former head of the NGO.

The members of the CA, however, said that they will leave the matter to the court. — RSJ, GMA News
