Record high 95% of Pinoys approach 2012 with hope — SWS

December 28, 2011 6:52pm
Despite the difficulties they faced this year, 95 percent of Filipinos — an “all-time high” — are entering 2012 with hope, according to a new survey by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS).

The SWS said the 95 percent in its survey, conducted Dec. 3 to 7, matches the all-time high 95 percent in 2002, and is two points higher than the 93 percent who entered 2011 with hope.

"Ninety-five percent of adult Filipinos are entering the New Year with hope rather than with fear (4 percent) ... This matches the all-time high 95 percent in 2002 who were hopeful of entering the 2003 New Year. It is also two points higher than the 93 percent who entered 2011 New Year with hope," it said.

It said New Year hope was highest among Class E or the poorest masses, and was "record-high" in Mindanao and Metro Manila.

The survey, however, was conducted before tropical storm Sendong devastated parts of Mindanao and Visayas, leaving more than 1,000 dead and P1 billion in damage to property.

On the other hand, SWS said New Year hope has been "customarily high."

"Hope with the coming year has customarily been at high levels, starting at 87 percent when SWS first polled about it in December 2000 and 88 percent in December 2001," it said.

New Year hope reached its record-high 95 percent in December 2002 and 90 percent in December 2003 before it declined to 81 percent in December 2004 and 85 percent in December 2005. It rebounded and remained steady at 91 to 92 percent from 2006 to 2008 before it declined to 89 percent in 2009.

It, however, recovered to 93 percent in December 2010 and again reached record-high 95 percent in December 2011.

The SWS added the survey question was patterned after polls conducted annually by the Allensbach Institute of Demoskopy in Germany. — KBK, GMA News
