Two children may lose hands in fireworks-related incident
At least two children face the loss of their hands at the start of 2012, after picking up firecrackers that burst in their hands.
In Pasay City, an 11-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to his hand after picking up an "unexploded" fountain that blew up in his hand.
The boy was rushed to the Pasay City General Hospital for treatment.
In Mandaluyong City, a 12-year-old child may also lose a hand after picking up an "unexploded" firecracker early Sunday.
The child was rushed to the Mandaluyong Medical Center at 6:40 a.m. for treatment, according to a report by radio dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa.
A sketchy initial information showed the firecracker exploded while the child was holding it.
An initial information provided by the child's kin indicated much of the child's hand was mangled.
Earlier Sunday, National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Eric Tayag said at least 108 fireworks-related injuries had been recorded in the first hour of the New Year.
Health authorities had repeatedly appealed to Filipinos not to light firecrackers to welcome the New Year.
The Department of Health even came out with a "safest firecracker" gimmick involving a CD recording of sounds simulating exploding firecrackers. — LBG, GMA News
