Enrile allays fears of Corona impeachment trial scaring traders

January 1, 2012 2:20pm
Two weeks before senator-judges begin the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, the Senate leadership on Sunday allayed fears that the proceedings could scare away prospective investors and traders from the Philippines.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said the impeachment trial could even enhance the Philippines’ image, but only if all parties concerned follow the rules.

“If they [investors] see all parties follow the proper procedures and that it is the law and not certain groups that are prevailing, they will maintain their confidence in investing here,” Enrile said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Besides, he said traders are smart enough to see if the rules and procedures are being followed.

On the other hand, he said traders and investors can also see through attempts by some groups to go around or even violate the rules of the impeachment trial.

Kung sasalaulain natin ang proseso at babrasuhin natin at gagawin nating wala sa lugar at ginagamit natin ay opinyon, kuro-kuro at speculation at itatabi ang batas, babalewalain, sino ang pupunta rito para magnegosyo?" he said.

(If we make a mockery of the process and force the issue with opinions and speculations at the expense of due process, who will still want to come here to invest?)

Enrile also downplayed the motions filed by some groups to stop the Senate from trying the impeachment case.

Instead, he said the Senate will prepare to tackle the motion for preliminary hearing lodged by Corona’s lawyers, to see if the complaint is sufficient.

Paguusapan namin yan, didinggin namin ang magkabila (We will tackle that motion. We will head the arguments of both sides),” he said. — LBG, GMA News
