NDRRMC: Storm Sendong survivor commits suicide
Tragedy struck anew in areas hit by Tropical Storm Sendong (Washi) after one of the survivors fatally stabbed himself, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Saturday.
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC identified the fatality as Roy Navarro, 33, who was staying at the City Central School evacuation center in Cagayan de Oro City.
Navarro "committed suicide by stabbing himself [last Friday]," the NDRRMC said.
NDRRMC's report did indicate what might have pushed Navarro to commit suicide.
Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Cities are areas hit hardest by Sendong, which devastated parts of Mindanao and Visayas in mid-December.
However, the NDRRMC did not include Navarro in the death toll, as the 6 a.m. update still tallied 1,257 and 4,663 injured.
At least 169 remained missing to date, it added.
The NDRRMC said Sendong has affected 117,665 families or 1,136,222 people in 808 villages in 57 towns and eight cities in 13 provinces.
Of these, 7,495 families or 35,928 people are staying in 52 evacuation centers.
The damage to property was estimated at P1,399,602,882.40, including P1,111,050,424.40 in infrastructure and P288,552,458 in agriculture. — LBG, GMA News
