Police in Metro Manila on Monday assured maximum tolerance in dealing with groups holding demonstrations for or against the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona at the Senate.
The Metro Manila police were given instructions to give equal treatment to both groups, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.
Some 500 Metro Manila police personnel were stationed around the Senate compound in Pasay City for the start of the impeachment trial, the report said.
But the police said they were instructed not to allow any group to get inside the Senate compound, the report added.
On Monday, several groups had planned rallies and demonstrations in Metro Manila in relation to Corona's impeachment trial.
Meanwhile, security was tight at the Senate before dawn Monday, with police politely asking people entering the Senate compound to show their ID cards.
The police guarding the Senate's main gate also checked incoming vehicles for passes. Drivers without the required passes were asked to park outside. –KG, GMA News
