Aquino dismisses Corona's remark on death, impeachment
President Benigno Aquino III on Monday ignored impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona’s statement that only death can remove him from his post.
“Bilang malayang Filipino, desisyon po niya kung ano ang gusto niyang gawin,” Aquino said in a press briefing after the inauguration of D’Luxe Bags Philippines, Inc. in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Concepcion, Tarlac.
He reiterated that the articles of impeachment filed against Corona were strong and backed by solid evidence.
“Solid yung charges levelled against the Chief Justice…Senado ang titingin ng mga akusasyon at huhusga. Napakatibay ng ebidensiyang ihaharap,” he said.
Corona, in a television interview, said those who wanted to remove him from his post “should kill me.”
The impeachment trial is set to start at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
Asked if he would monitor the impeachment proceedings, Aquino said he has two meetings for today and is preparing for the visit of former Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo.
The President is set to be briefed on the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation proposal on Nayong Pilipino Foundating property and a meeting with Budget Secretary Florencio Abad.
Both meetings will be held in Malacañang but not open to media for coverage. - VVP, GMA News
